Formula One driver of Red Bull Racing, 19-year-old Max Verstappen got passed 9 cars (or legends) from Sixteenth position to seventh in less than two minutes in the first lap of Chinese Grand Prix 2017, finishing 3rd, behind Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton.
The cockpit cam has recorded the intense moment, in a video released by Formula1.
Belgium-born, Max is the son of Dutch former Formula One driver Jos Verstappen and it is pretty clear by now that the F1’s youngest ever winner and boy wonder has racing running through his veins.
Race winner, three-time Formula One World Champion, Lewis Hamilton have described Max Verstappen’s as a “breath of fresh air” around the Formula 1 circuit.
Hamilton, who also made the fastest lap of the race- 1:35.378 spoke at the post-race press-“I quite like him[Max] up here, it makes me look younger while I’m up here, it’s good to have a younger driver around. Max has obviously done a fantastic job since he’s been in the sport[from 2015] and a real breath of fresh air for everyone.”
Hamilton added that Max got a great following and he’s definitely been in some great situations in some races and really maximized above and beyond his experience, which is why he gets the ‘driver of the day’.
While Max, being the genuinely humble person that he is, said, “In the wet, it’s easier to overtake”.
He admitted that he is very happy to be on the podium. Starting from sixteenth, you have no reason to complain and it was a very good race for him and he felt very good in the car.
Speaking of the all the compliments he received regarding his overtaking moves, he stated “I am just doing my thing [blowing the F1 world]. I just wanted to pass the cars ahead of me and luckily I could just do that today given the conditions. I had a lot of fun indeed. You are able to brake late now, like in turn six, where I overtook Ricciardo[teammate] and Bottas. It is difficult to follow other drivers, but this track[chinese] is very suitable for overtaking and I like that.”
