Hou Yifan keeps Magnus Carlsen ashore; Leads at Grenke Chess Classic

Magnus Carlsen

Women’s No.1 Hou Yifan drew against world champion Magnus Carlsen in the round 3 of Grenke Chess Classic 2017, Germany

With four of the world’s top nine players at Grenke, the event is full of heavyweight games. But one name is outshining the rest that is world’s best female player-Hou Yifan of China. Yifan is the only female among the eight cool cats playing in the event.

In the third round, Yifan met the best male player Magnus Carlsen, settling down for a rook-ending-draw. Both players wearing big square glasses kinda looked adorable together. Yifan continues to lead the tournament with 2,5 points, a full point ahead of Carlsen.

Yifan rated 2649 is pulled off a major upset defeating American No.2 world No. 3 Fabiano Caruana, rated 2817, in the first round. She continued her dominance in the second when she cracked up local Georg Meier rated 2630.

Yifan is known for her outgoing personality, she boycotted the 2017 Women’s World Chess Championship because of dissatisfaction with FIDE’s rules and then made a huge controversy by throwing away her final round game just in five moves in the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival because she was made to play only against women.

Hou-Yifan

It looks like the 23-year-old, hardcore genuine Feminst{ yes! there exist pseudo ones too!) is enjoying her level best at Grenke Chess Classic being pinned against best players in the world.

There were three other games played in the round. World No.9, Levon Aronian won a nice technical game against world No.5 Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Fabiano Caruana won a killer tactical game against Georg Meier and Arkadij Naiditsch ousted Matthias Blübaum. The three winners of the round, have now two points in total.

Carlsen-Yifan Game:

Magnus Carlsen, white, started with the “Rolls Royce” of chess openings- Najdorf Variation of the Sicilian Defence against the Yifan, alarming that he ain’t gonna be easy on women.

Yifan answered well and took charge of the important d5 square in the middle game. When she had her rook in the center, the experts were convinced that she had a slightly better position. However, Yifan failed to find a winning continuation. And Carlsen forced his way to an equal rook endgame{the most frustrating of all}, resulting in a draw.
